Some 56 km further to the south is Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, which is still a thriving city with specific fascinating sights and a most romantic location for its houses are as if bound to the rocks by wild lilac and vines, forming picturesque reefs veined by steps and narrow streets.
